Cut and Shuffle Quilts Class
Tuesday January 18th – 12:30-3:30 pm
Teacher: Jan Ochterbeck
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner. Must be able cut accurately and sew an accurate scant ¼” seam.
Description: In this workshop we will make three of the blocks in Cut and Shuffle Quiltsusing the Block Mama method. Once you’ve made the blocks you can use them in any of the Cut and Shuffle quilts or in any other project, as you like. Each block finishes 12” (12-1/2” with seam allowances). Each block is two colors. I recommend a light/low volume background and a strongly contrasting feature color, bright or dark. You can use the same fabrics for all the blocks in this class.
Fabric: 3/8 yard each of two fabrics, one light for background and one bright or dark feature color. Fabrics that read mostly solid will work best for this workshop. These will be used for all of the workshop blocks.
Pattern: The block instructions and quilts using them are featured in Cut and Shuffle Quilts. If books are sold out and you didn’t get one, block instructions and the Positivitypattern will be available for separate purchase as a stand-alone pattern for $10 in class.
- Sewing machine in good working order that you are able to operate.
- ¼” foot for machine and new needle in the machine.
- 6” x 24” ruler and rotary cutter with a new blade.
- Blue painter’s tape or ¼” quilter’s tape.
- Basic sewing supplies (Scissors, thread, pins, seam ripper.) Cutting mats and Irons are available in the room.
Pre-Cutting: Please cut the following before the start of the workshop.
- From the light background fabric: Cut 3 (three) 9-1/2” squares.
- From the feature color:
- Cut 4 (four) 2-1/2” width of fabric strips. - Sub cut two of the strips into 6 (six) 13-1/2” x 2-1/2” pieces.
- Sub cut the other strips into 6 (six) 9-1/2” x 2-1/2” pieces.
- Note: the more accurately you cut, the more successful your blocks will be and the happier you will be with them.
Other Prep: Test your seam allowance for accuracy by using two 2-1/2” scraps. Sew them together using a scant ¼” seam which is one fabric-thickness less than ¼”. Press to one side. Your piece should measure 4-1/2”. If it is larger, your seam is too scant. It your piece is smaller, your seam allowance is too wide. Adjust to get the correct seam allowance. If necessary, use a seam guide on your machine and bring it to class.
